Understanding Cylinder Heads in Your Nissan Engine

Most drivers know the basic functions of their vehicle's systems, but fewer understand the signs of gradual wear and when replacement becomes necessary. The cylinder head sits atop your engine block and forms the upper portion of each combustion chamber where fuel ignites and power is created. Without a properly functioning cylinder head, your engine simply cannot operate. This component houses the valves, valve springs, and camshaft that control air and fuel intake as well as exhaust gas expulsion, making it one of the most mechanically complex parts under your hood.

The Role Cylinder Heads Play in Engine Operation

Cylinder heads seal the combustion chambers and contain the passages through which air, fuel, and exhaust gases flow. In your Nissan Murano or Nissan Frontier, the cylinder head manages intake and exhaust valve operation, allowing fresh air-fuel mixture to enter and burned gases to exit at precisely the right moments. The head also incorporates coolant passages that prevent overheating and maintain consistent operating temperatures. Valve seats machined into the head create sealing surfaces where valves close against the head material. The combustion chamber shape molded into the head's underside directly affects compression ratio, flame travel, and overall engine efficiency. Why Cylinder Heads Crack and Warp
